NASA is developing a ChatGPT-like assistant for astronauts
NASA is developing a system that will allow astronauts to talk to vessels, conduct experiments, and more using a natural-language ChatGPT-like interface, The Guardian reported.
"The idea is to get to a point where we have conversational interactions with space vehicles and they [are] also talking back to us on alerts, interesting findings they see in the solar system and beyond," said Dr. Larissa Suzuki during an IEEE meeting on next-gen space communication. "It's really not like science fiction anymore."
NASA aims to deploy the system on the Gateway, a space station that will orbit the moon as part of the Artemis mission. It would use a natural language interface that allows astronauts to quickly obtain relevant information without diving into complex manuals.
On a separate page hosted by NASA, the agency wrote that it would require AI and machine learning technologies to manage various systems when Gateway is unoccupied as well. Those include autonomous operations of science payloads, data transmission prioritization, autonomous operations, and health management.
For instance, Suzuki theorized the system could be used to detect, and perhaps fix, glitches and inefficiencies as they occur. "We cannot send an engineer up in space whenever a space vehicle goes offline or its software breaks somehow," she said.
HSBC rolls out cryptocurrency services in Hong Kong
HSBC Hong Kong, the largest bank in the special administrative region of China, has enabled its customers to trade Bitcoin and Ether exchange-traded funds (ETFs).
According to local journalist Colin Wu, HSBC HK will offer cryptocurrency ETFs listed on Hong Kong's stock exchange. At the time of writing, the exchange lists three crypto ETFs: CSOP Bitcoin Futures ETF, CSOP Ethereum Futures ETF, and Samsung Bitcoin Futures Active ETF.
The development marks HSBC HK as the first bank in the region to allow trading in crypto ETFs, according to Wu, who said the ETF listings occurred on Monday.
CSOP Bitcoin Futures ETF and CSOP Ether Futures ETF are both managed by CSOP Asset Management and track standardised, cash-settled futures contracts traded on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME). Both the ETFs were listed on Hong Kong's stock exchange last December.
Samsung Bitcoin Futures Active ETF, on the other hand, launched in January and is managed by Samsung Asset Management Hong Kong.
The new services launched alongside HSBC HK's Virtual Asset Investor Education Center, an initiative that requires investors to read and confirm educational materials and risk disclosures before investing.

Riot secures 33,000 new Bitcoin mining rigs for $162M
Riot Platforms — one of the world’s largest Bitcoin mining companies — has bought 33,280 “next-generation” mining rigs for its Texas facility, costing $162.9 million.
The rigs, which were sourced from mining manufacturer MicroBT, will boost the firm’s self-mining capacity by 7.6 exahashes per second (EH/s) and comes in advance of the upcoming Bitcoin halving.
“Riot is excited to announce our first order of Bitcoin miners for our Corsicana Facility from MicroBT,” Riot CEO Jason Les said in a press release. “These new models are among the most powerful and efficient miners ever made for Bitcoin mining and are designed and produced specifically for immersion cooling systems.”
Of the 33,280 machines, 8,320 are M56S+ models with a hash rate of 220 terahashes per second (TH/s), while the remaining 24,960 M56S++ are slightly more powerful at 230 TH/s.
However, the machines aren’t scheduled for delivery until December, and won’t be deployed until the first quarter of 2024.
The company has also secured an option to purchase an additional 66,560 M56S++ miners before December 31, 2024. If executed, Riot's hashrate capacity would increase to 35.4 EH/s.
