STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

TECH
Beyerdynamic debuts open-ear true wireless earphones

Several audio companies are embracing open-ear earbuds, with Beyerdynamic joining in with the VERIO 200, their first open-ear true wireless headphones. Priced at $220, these are now available for order.

The VERIO 200 features a custom 16.22mm graphene driver to minimize sound distortion, addressing common audio quality issues with open-ear designs. This style offers more comfort for those who dislike in-ear buds and allows better awareness of surroundings, making it ideal for outdoor use. The secure hook design ensures they stay in place during physical activities.

Beyerdynamic claims up to eight hours of battery life, with an additional 27 hours from the charging case. The earbuds are Bluetooth 5.3-compatible, work with iOS and Android, and can be controlled via voice or Beyerdynamic's new mobile app for custom EQ and sound tuning.

World's biggest music labels sue AI song-generators

Major music labels—Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, and Sony Music Group—are suing AI startups Suno and Udio for alleged extensive copyright infringement. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) initiated these lawsuits to uphold copyright law in the face of AI technology.

In US federal court, the labels accuse Suno and Udio of illegally scraping their copyrighted tracks from the internet. The lawsuits seek injunctions and damages up to $150,000 per infringed work, aiming to establish licensed music training as the industry standard for AI.

Suno AI and Udio AI, including Microsoft partner Suno, are accused by the RIAA of generating music that closely mimics copyrighted songs. The lawsuits highlight concerns about unauthorized use of copyrighted material in AI-generated compositions, citing examples involving famous artists such as The Temptations, Green Day, and Mariah Carey.

Apple charged with breaching EU tech rules

Apple's App Store "steering" policies violate the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), regulators said in a preliminary ruling. The European Commission also launched a new investigation into Apple's fees for alternative iOS marketplaces.

Margrethe Vestager, head of EU competition policy, emphasized that "steering" is crucial to reduce developers' reliance on gatekeepers and inform consumers of better offers. The DMA requires gatekeepers, including Apple, Alphabet, Amazon, ByteDance, Meta, and Microsoft, to allow developers to direct consumers to external offers free of charge by March 2024.

Apple faces potential fines of up to 10% of its annual global revenue, or $38 billion, for noncompliance. The company has until March 2025 to respond to the European Commission's assessment. Apple has made changes to comply with the DMA and will continue to engage with the Commission.
