STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

Brazil threatens X with $900k daily fine for evading ban

Brazil's Supreme Court is threatening X (formerly Twitter) and Starlink with daily fines of nearly $1 million for not complying with a ban. Judge Alexandre de Moraes ordered regulators to block X again after it briefly became accessible in Brazil, citing non-compliance with a previous ban.

X had resumed service in the country after switching to Cloudflare’s servers, which made it harder for Brazilian ISPs to enforce the block. The company claimed this was an unintentional restoration due to changing network providers in Latin America.

Moraes warned that fines will begin on September 19 for each day the block isn't reinstated. Starlink, owned by Elon Musk like X, faces joint liability if the fines aren’t paid. The court also ordered further measures to prevent access through other servers circumventing the block.

YouTube launches ‘Hype’ feature to boost smaller creators

YouTube is launching a new “Hype” feature to help creators with fewer than 500,000 subscribers grow their audience. Announced at the Made On YouTube event, viewers can now boost videos by clicking the “Hype” button, located below the “like” button. As a video gains more "hypes," it climbs a leaderboard of the top 100 hyped videos, potentially reaching a wider audience.

To prevent abuse, users are limited to three hypes per week. YouTube plans to eventually allow fans to buy extra hypes, offering a new revenue stream for creators. The platform hasn’t specified how much of these purchases it will take, but it typically keeps 30%, as it does with Super Thanks.

Creators will earn points as their videos gain hypes, moving up country-specific leaderboards. Smaller channels will receive a bonus multiplier to level the playing field with larger creators.

LinkedIn is using your data to train generative AI models

LinkedIn has automatically opted users into using their data to train generative AI models. The platform updated its privacy policy without notifying users directly, allowing their data to be used for AI training. You can opt-out by navigating to your account settings, selecting the "Data for Generative AI Improvement" tab, and switching the toggle to "off."

Opting out stops LinkedIn from using your data for future AI training but doesn't affect past usage. LinkedIn claims it uses privacy-enhancing technologies to remove personal information from training sets and exempts users in the EU, EEA, and Switzerland from this data collection.

For those concerned about other data uses, LinkedIn has separate machine learning tools for personalization and moderation, and opting out of these requires filling out a LinkedIn Data Processing Objection Form.

Apple releases iOS 18.1 with Apple Intelligence beta

Apple is moving closer to launching its Apple Intelligence features, with the public beta of iOS 18.1 now available. This release brings some of the highly anticipated generative AI tools, but the full rollout for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS Sequoia 18.1 will take a few more weeks. If you're installing the beta, it's recommended to back up your data first.

Currently, Apple Intelligence is only supported on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, with the iPhone 16 lineup adding support on Friday. M-series iPads and Macs will also be compatible, but for now, you’ll need to set your device and Siri language to US English to access the features.

The first wave of tools includes call transcriptions, writing assistance, email prioritization, and more. Features like ChatGPT integration and advanced Siri capabilities will arrive in future updates over the coming months.
