Meta tests AI-powered search bar in Instagram
Techcrunch reports Meta is expanding accessibility to its generative AI-driven offerings, with experiments underway to integrate Meta AI into platforms like WhatsApp and Instagram.
Users in countries like India are testing the Meta AI chatbot on WhatsApp, while the company explores incorporating Meta AI into the Instagram search bar for both chat and content discovery. In the Instagram search bar, queries lead to direct message conversations with Meta AI, offering users the ability to ask questions or utilize pre-loaded prompts. While the interface design has drawn comparisons to Perplexity AI's search screen, it also serves as a tool for discovering new content on Instagram.
For instance, users can tap prompts like "Beautiful Maui sunset Reels" to explore related Reels content. Meta's initiative showcases its intention to leverage generative AI not only for text generation but also for surfacing fresh content within platforms like Instagram.
The latest version of xAI's Grok can process images
Elon Musk's xAI has unveiled Grok-1.5V, its latest AI model capable of processing visual data alongside text. This marks a significant advancement, enabling tasks like translating flow charts into code or explaining memes. Grok-1.5V follows closely on the heels of Grok-1.5, which focused on coding, math, and context processing.
xAI plans to roll out Grok-1.5V to early testers and users soon, although no specific timeline has been provided. Alongside this release, the company has introduced RealWorldQA, a benchmark dataset for evaluating AI models. RealWorldQA contains 700 images with associated questions and answers, designed to challenge multimodal models like Grok.
During testing against competitors such as OpenAI's GPT-4V and Google Gemini Pro 1.5, xAI's technology achieved the highest scores on the RealWorldQA dataset, showcasing its capabilities in handling diverse real-world tasks.

Tesla cuts full self-driving subscription prices
Tesla has slashed the monthly subscription fee for its Full Self Driving (Supervised) software by half, now priced at $99 per month compared to the previous $199. Introduced in 2021 during its beta phase, purchasing the feature outright costs $12,000, making the subscription a potentially more cost-effective option over time.
This price adjustment comes amidst Tesla's efforts to bolster its appeal following a challenging financial quarter in 2024, marked by a decline in year-over-year and quarter-over-quarter EV shipments. Despite expectations, Tesla fell short of Q1 2024 delivery projections. To counter this, the company offered free trials of Full Self Driving (Supervised) and now mandates demonstrations for North American buyers.
Meanwhile, Tesla raised the prices of all Model Y vehicles by $1,000 in April, while remaining tight-lipped on shipment figures for the Cybertruck. Looking ahead, Tesla gears up for the release of a "next-generation low-cost" EV, anticipated around 2025.

VeChain teams up with UFC to tokenize fighter gloves
According to an April 12 blog post from VeChain, UFC fighters' gloves will be tokenized and tracked on the VeChainThor network using NFC chips. These chips will authenticate each pair, allowing buyers to verify their authenticity via smart contracts. The gloves will debut at UFC 300, becoming collectors' items after being donated by the athletes.
VeChain aims to prevent fraud in the secondary market, leveraging aspects of its ToolChain system for supply-chain management. The initiative includes distributing an initial set of 12 exclusive gloves to celebrities like Joe Rogan, with UFC CEO Dana White unveiling the partnership live.
While some VeChainThor token holders welcomed the news, others questioned its impact on VTHO transaction fees. Despite varying opinions, VeThor's market cap surpassed $283 million as of April 12, following the VeChain Foundation's $100 million sponsorship deal with UFC in June 2022.
