STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

TECH
You can now share 20 slides in one Instagram post

Instagram is increasing the number of photos and videos you can add to a single grid post. As of Thursday, each carousel post can now include up to 20 pieces of content, doubling the previous limit of 10. This feature, known as the “photo dump,” was first introduced in 2017.

The update enhances Instagram’s carousel function, which already lets users pair songs with slides and collaborate on posts. The larger limit is particularly useful for collaborative projects where multiple users contribute to a single post.

This move aligns Instagram with TikTok, which supports up to 35 photos per post. While TikTok initially focused on short-form videos, it’s seen a rise in photo-based content, including meme formats and long, story-driven slideshows. Instagram’s expanded limit could encourage similar trends within its platform.

M4 Mac Mini to become Apple's smallest ever computer

The Mac mini is set for a major redesign with the upcoming M4 model, potentially becoming Apple's smallest desktop yet, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Expected later this year, it could be about the size of an Apple TV box, marking its first major update since 2010.

The new Mac mini might be just 3.7 inches wide, significantly smaller than the current M2 model, though it could be taller than the existing 1.4-inch height. It will likely maintain an aluminum shell.

Apple is reportedly testing two versions: one similar to the iPad Pro and another with a more powerful M4 Pro chipset. Gurman mentions that prototypes include multiple USB-C ports, a power socket, and an HDMI port, hinting at a possible shift away from USB-A ports.

UK opens probe into Amazon's AI alliance with Anthropic

The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is investigating Amazon’s $4 billion investment in AI startup Anthropic, the creator of the AI chatbot Claude. The probe will determine if this investment should be classified as a merger under UK regulations, and if so, whether it could harm market competition. The CMA has 40 working days to reach a decision.

Amazon asserts that this investment does not grant it a majority stake in Anthropic, nor does it pose competition concerns according to TechCrunch and Financial Times. Anthropic also maintains that the deal does not constitute a merger, emphasizing its independence and lack of Amazon’s board influence.

This investigation is part of a broader effort by UK regulators to address "quasi-mergers," where large companies gain significant influence over startups through strategic investments, avoiding the scrutiny of formal mergers.

Apple Intelligence could cost up to $20 a month

Apple's advanced AI features might soon come with a price tag. Neil Shah, a partner at Counterpoint Research, told CNBC that premium AI services could cost between $10 and $20 per month, likely bundled into a higher Apple One subscription tier.

Apple One, starting at $19.95 per month, already includes services like Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, and Apple Fitness+. Adding AI features to this bundle aligns with Apple's strategy of monetizing premium services. "Apple is one of the few connected device companies that has successfully monetized its value-added services," said CCS Insight's Ben Wood to CNBC.

While some AI features are already available in the iOS 18.1 developer beta, such as Writing Tools and Call Recording, others announced at WWDC won't launch until next year. For now, these features remain free to try.
