Astronomers find Milky Way's biggest stellar black hole

The Milky Way harbors not only a supermassive black hole but also numerous smaller stellar black holes formed from collapsing massive stars. While around 100 million stellar black holes are estimated in our galaxy, many remain undiscovered.

‎‎‏‏‎ ‎

Recently, the European Space Agency's Gaia mission uncovered a remarkable find: a stellar black hole 33 times the size of our sun, making it the largest of its kind discovered in the Milky Way, located approximately 1,926 light-years away. Named Gaia BH3, the discovery resulted from meticulous analysis of Gaia mission data by ESA scientists, who noticed an anomaly in a giant star's orbit in the Aquila constellation.

‎‎‏‏‎ ‎

Despite its proximity, BH3 remained elusive due to a lack of nearby celestial bodies for reference. Ground-based telescopes confirmed its size, marking a significant leap in understanding such celestial bodies, with implications for future research.

Amazon Music launches a new AI playlist generator

Amazon is introducing Maestro, a generative AI-powered playlist feature for Amazon Music, similar to Spotify's offerings. Currently in beta, Maestro is available to a limited number of US users on iOS and Android.

‎‎‏‏‎ ‎

Beta participants will find Maestro on their home screen after updating the app, or they can access it by creating a new playlist. Using natural language prompts, users can generate playlists based on sounds, activities, emotions, or even emojis.

‎‎‏‏‎ ‎

Though still in beta, Maestro appears capable of handling diverse prompts, with safeguards in place to prevent offensive language. Amazon intends to expand Maestro's availability gradually, with Amazon Music Unlimited subscribers gaining instant access to playlists, while Prime members and free-tier users can enjoy 30-second previews before saving.

Tech Special

Unveiled in November 2023, the Humane AI Pin swiftly caught the attention of gadget enthusiasts with its diminutive form factor and embedded AI capabilities. However, recent reviews have dashed hopes, revealing significant flaws in its functionality.

‏‏‎

Prominent reviewers such as Marques Brownlee and Engadget have issued scathing criticisms, deeming it one of the most disappointing products they've encountered. Despite commendations for its sturdy aluminum design and innovative magnetic 'battery booster', the device fails to justify its hefty $699 price tag coupled with a monthly subscription fee.

‏‏‎

These critiques not only spotlight the AI Pin's shortcomings but also offer broader insights into the trajectory of AI-powered gadgets. While the device provides a tantalizing glimpse into a potential screen-less future, it falls short of replacing smartphones, as underscored by Bloomberg's review.

.

Boston Dynamics, known for its pioneering work in humanoid robotics, has announced the retirement of its iconic bipedal robot, Atlas, amidst a surge of interest and investment in the field. The decision comes as the Hyundai-owned company aims to focus on commercializing its technologies, following its acquisition and leadership changes.

‏‏‎

Atlas, which debuted a decade ago through collaboration with DARPA, represented a significant leap in humanoid robotics at the time. Despite its advancements, such as impressive locomotion capabilities, certain aspects of the robot, like its hydraulics, are now considered outdated by current standards.

‏‏‎

While Boston Dynamics remains a leader in robotics research, the retirement of Atlas signals a shift in focus towards more commercially viable projects, amidst growing competition in the industry.
