Google faces £7 billion UK class action lawsuit

Google faces a £7 billion class action lawsuit in the UK, accusing the tech giant of abusing its dominance in search and harming consumers. The UK’s Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) ruled Friday that the case can proceed, adding to Google’s mounting legal battles globally.

Filed in September 2023 by consumer rights advocate Nikki Stopford, the lawsuit claims Google's anticompetitive tactics inflated advertising costs, ultimately raising prices for millions of UK consumers. It also accuses Google of forcing Android phone makers to pre-install Google Search and Chrome, and paying Apple billions to make Google the default search engine on Safari—issues also challenged in the EU and US.

Stopford argues that Google manipulates the search market to charge higher advertising rates, which in turn hikes prices for consumers. This legal action aims to foster healthier competition in digital markets and hold Google accountable.

Instagram adds live location sharing to direct messages

Instagram has introduced new updates to its direct messages (DMs), including live location sharing for up to one hour, making it easier to coordinate meetups at events or outings. This feature, available in one-on-one or group chats, is off by default and is more private than similar tools like Snapchat's SnapMap.

Additionally, Instagram now allows users to assign nicknames to themselves and their friends in group chats. These nicknames are chat-specific and can be locked to prevent changes. The update also brings 17 new sticker packs with over 300 designs, offering more ways to personalize conversations. Users can save, reuse, and create stickers using AI or the app's cutout feature.

With DMs becoming a central part of the app, Instagram redesigned its interface, placing the chat icon front and center in the navigation bar. These updates are rolling out in select countries, with more regions to follow.

Webb telescope captures new image of Sombrero galaxy

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is once again revealing the universe's wonders, this time focusing on the Sombrero galaxy (M104). Using its Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI), Webb captures a stunning new view, transforming the galaxy into an archery target with a supermassive black hole at its center, challenging its classic appearance.

Webb’s high-resolution images show intricate clumps of dust in the outer ring of the galaxy, a feature invisible in previous visible light images. These clumps, made of carbon-rich molecules, hint at young star-forming regions, despite the Sombrero's relatively low star formation rate.

In the background, countless galaxies stretch across the cosmos. Located 30 million light-years away in the Virgo constellation, the Sombrero galaxy offers a fascinating glimpse into deep space, beyond our reach but within our understanding.
