STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

TECH
Leaked images show new iPhone 16 colours

As Apple gears up to unveil the iPhone 16 series, new photos reveal significant design updates. Leaker Sonny Dickson has shared exclusive images of the upcoming models, showcasing their fresh look ahead of the early September launch. These late-stage dummy units lack internal components but highlight the new design elements for accessory makers.

The iPhone 16 Pro models are shown in three familiar colors: White Titanium, Black Titanium, and Natural Titanium. While a Blue Titanium variant from 2023 is missing, new color options are anticipated to appeal to fashion-conscious buyers.

For the iPhone 16, expect a palette of traditional white and black, complemented by deeper shades of pink, blue, and green. Additionally, rumors suggest a potential new bronze color for the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max, adding another stylish choice.

Intel announces layoffs of around 15,000 staff

Intel announced over 15% staff layoffs, about 15,000 employees, aiming to cut $10 billion in spending by 2025 following a poor second-quarter earnings report. CEO Pat Gelsinger cited high costs, low margins, and the need for bold actions given disappointing financial results and a tough outlook for the latter half of 2024.

Intel has struggled to leverage the AI boom like rivals such as Nvidia. Despite a 10% workforce increase, its annual revenues fell by $24 billion from 2020 to 2023. While other chipmakers thrived, Intel lagged behind in capturing the growth in revenues and valuations.

In the second quarter, Intel saw a 1% revenue decline year-over-year, blaming gross margin issues related to its AI PC products. Alongside layoffs, Intel will offer a voluntary departure program and an enhanced retirement package for eligible employees.

Taco Bell to roll out AI ordering at drive-thru lanes

Yum Brands plans to deploy artificial intelligence in drive-thru lanes at hundreds of Taco Bell locations by the end of the year. The company is expanding this technology across the U.S., with ambitions to roll it out globally.

This move positions Yum Brands ahead of rivals like Wendy’s and White Castle in adopting voice AI, aiming to enhance service speed, cut labor costs, and increase sales. While McDonald’s recently ended its trial of a similar AI system, Yum Brands has reported success with its technology, noting improvements in order accuracy, reduced wait times, and increased profitability.

Currently, over 100 Taco Bell locations in the U.S. use voice AI, and five KFC restaurants in Australia are also testing the technology. Yum Brands remains confident in the tech's ability to optimize operations and boost customer satisfaction.

Google expands Gemma 2 family with new models

Google has unveiled three new generative AI models, adding to its Gemma 2 series: Gemma 2 2B, ShieldGemma, and Gemma Scope. These models promise to be “safer,” “smaller,” and “more transparent” than most, a notable claim for the AI community.

Gemma 2 2B is a versatile, lightweight model suitable for various hardware, from laptops to edge devices, available for research and commercial use through platforms like Google’s Vertex AI and Kaggle. ShieldGemma focuses on safety, acting as a filter to detect and manage toxic content, while Gemma Scope enhances transparency by allowing developers to examine and interpret the inner workings of Gemma 2 models.

Unlike Google’s proprietary Gemini models, the Gemma series emphasizes openness and community engagement, similar to Meta’s Llama initiative. This move aims to foster goodwill and collaboration within the developer community.
