STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

Internet Archive hit by security breach and DDOS attack

The Internet Archive has been hit by DDoS attacks, taking the site offline just as it was about to disclose a previous data breach involving 31 million stolen records. Security expert Troy Hunt noted the attacks are likely coincidental, involving multiple parties.

Founder Brewster Kahle has shared updates on X, stating the team is working to restore the site. A group called Blackmeta claimed responsibility, posting a cryptic message tying the attack to the U.S. and referencing the stolen data linked to Hunt’s haveibeenpwned site.

These attacks add to the Archive's challenges, which include a recent legal defeat over ebook copyright issues in the U.S. Court of Appeals. The Archive, a nonprofit, provides free access to digital media and hosts the Wayback Machine.

Longtime Apple executive Dan Riccio is retiring

Dan Riccio, a key Apple executive and former head of hardware engineering, is set to retire this month after an impressive 26-year career at the tech giant. Starting with Apple as the leader of the iPad division, Riccio became the SVP of hardware engineering in 2012, overseeing iconic products like AirPods and larger iPhones, and initiating ambitious projects such as the Apple Car and Vision Pro.

In 2021, Riccio handed over his hardware engineering role to John Ternus and shifted to a mysterious new project, which was later revealed to be the Vision Pro headset. Ternus will now lead the Vision Products Group as rumors swirl about his potential future as Tim Cook’s successor.

Riccio's departure follows a wave of executive exits at Apple, including industrial design chief Evans Hankey and several other key designers, signaling a notable shift within the company’s leadership.

SEC, FBI, DOJ file lawsuits against fraudulent crypto firms

The SEC has charged three crypto firms—Gotbit Consulting, ZM Quant Investment, and CLS Global—and nine individuals with fraud and market manipulation. The suits, filed in Massachusetts on October 9, allege wash trading and other violations to inflate interest in cryptocurrencies like Saitama and Robo Inu.

Gotbit's marketing director, Fedor Kedrov, is accused of manipulating crypto prices, while Vy Pham, organizer of these projects, faces charges for unregistered securities and market manipulation. Four others connected to Pham were also sued. ZM Quant and CLS Global face similar accusations regarding another crypto asset, NexFundAI, which was created by the FBI in a sting operation.

The SEC seeks injunctions, financial penalties, and bans on certain defendants. Meanwhile, the FBI continues to investigate other cryptocurrencies tied to the case, involving 18 individuals and multiple firms.

Thai SEC proposes allowing crypto products in mutual, private funds

Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is proposing to allow mutual and private funds to invest in cryptocurrency products, responding to growing interest from institutional investors. Announced on October 9, the proposal permits funds to invest in crypto exchange-traded funds (ETFs) listed on U.S. stock exchanges.

The SEC plans to include “investment tokens” with traditional securities like stocks, reflecting their similar characteristics and risks. Retail mutual funds would be limited to a 15% crypto allocation, while institutional investors would have no cap. The SEC will also revise fund management criteria, focusing on asset custody and information disclosure.

Additionally, the SEC is establishing a Digital Asset Regulatory Sandbox for ten private firms to trial exchanging crypto assets for local currency, which could lead to crypto payments in Thailand, pending Bank of Thailand approval.
