OpenAI co-founder raises $1 billion for his new AI firm

Ilya Sutskever, co-founder and ex-chief scientist of OpenAI, has raised $1 billion for his new AI startup, Safe Superintelligence Inc. (SSI), valuing the company at $5 billion. The funding comes from notable investors including NFDG, a16z, Sequoia, DST Global, and SV Angel.

Sutskever, alongside engineer Dan Levy, left OpenAI in June 2024, just after creating the firm's “Superalignment” safety team. While Sutskever cited a desire to pursue new opportunities, some former employees suggested internal conflicts with CEO Sam Altman and the board.

SSI aims to develop a single AI model that surpasses human intelligence while ensuring safety. This contrasts with other firms like Anthropic and OpenAI, which also focus on safe AI but with broader missions. SSI's unique approach is its commitment to creating only one superintelligent product.

TECH
Instagram to allow users to comment on stories

Instagram is introducing public comments on Stories, moving beyond the previous private message feature. This change allows followers who are also followed back by the poster to leave comments directly on Stories, making interactions more visible.

Comments on Stories will be temporary, lasting only 24 hours, and users can toggle this feature on or off for each Story. It remains unclear if comments will be archived after the Story expires, with Instagram yet to provide further details.

This update follows Instagram's trend of enhancing interactive features on Stories and Reels. Recently, the platform also introduced disappearing “Notes” for grid posts and Reels, which expire after three days and can be shared with mutual follows or a curated list of close friends, emphasizing engagement over mere content consumption.

Ripple seeks stay on $125 million SEC payout

Ripple Labs is seeking to delay the $125 million judgment imposed on August 7 by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). In a September 4 filing, Ripple's lawyers proposed placing $139 million—111% of the judgment—into a bank account until 30 days after the appeal period or resolution of any appeal.

The SEC has agreed to postpone the payment deadline beyond September 6, suggesting the possibility of an appeal. Ripple executives, including CEO Brad Garlinghouse, celebrated the August judgment as a “victory,” while the company expressed respect for the fine.

The SEC's case, alleging Ripple used XRP as an unregistered security, initially targeted Ripple's top executives. However, in July 2023, Judge Torres ruled that XRP tokens were not securities in the context of programmatic sales on exchanges.

Polygon begins migration from MATIC to POL

Polygon has officially launched the migration to its new token, POL, after a year of community discussions. POL will replace MATIC as the native gas and staking token on the Polygon PoS chain, with exchanges expected to list it soon.

This transition is pivotal for Polygon’s shift to a ZK chain and integration with AggLayer, which aims to unify liquidity and state across chains. POL will retain MATIC’s tokenomics with a supply of 10 billion tokens.

The MATIC to POL conversion is 1:1, with a 2% annual increase in emissions over ten years to support growth. MATIC holders on Polygon PoS will see the upgrade automatically, while those on Ethereum, Polygon zkEVM, or centralized exchanges must manually migrate their tokens. POL will also gain expanded functionalities in block production, zero-knowledge proof generation, and Data Availability Committees (DACs).
