STORIES MAKING A SPLASH
TECH
EU may fine Elon Musk’s other companies for X violations
European Union regulators warned Elon Musk's X platform that it may face fines calculated based on revenues from Musk's other companies, including SpaceX. According to a Bloomberg article, X is under investigation for alleged violations of the Digital Services Act (DSA), which could result in fines of up to 6% of total global annual turnover.
Regulators are considering whether to hold Musk personally liable rather than just X, potentially including revenue from Neuralink, xAI, and the Boring Company in the fine calculation. Tesla's revenue would not be counted due to its public ownership.
This approach could significantly raise potential fines, particularly as X struggles with advertising revenue. Notably, Brazil has already treated Musk's companies as a single economic group, seizing about $2 million from a Starlink bank account to cover X's fines.

BUSINESS
Uber is reportedly considering an Expedia acquisition
Uber is reportedly considering acquiring Expedia, one of the world's largest travel booking companies, valued at $20 billion. According to the Financial Times, the discussions are in the early stages, with no formal offer made yet. Uber is currently assessing the feasibility of the deal with the help of advisers.
While Uber's CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi, was once the CEO of Expedia and remains on its Board of Directors, he may not be directly involved in discussions. The idea for the potential acquisition reportedly came from a third party, not Khosrowshahi himself.
Uber has long aimed to expand into a broader travel platform. It already offers train, bus, and flight bookings in some markets and has made large acquisitions, including Postmates and Drizly. With Uber becoming profitable in 2023, the company could be well-positioned to acquire Expedia.

X updates privacy policy to allow AI training with user data
X is updating its privacy policy on November 15, 2024, allowing user data to be shared with third-party collaborators for AI model training. This could open new revenue streams for X, as outside companies may license this data. Although users can opt out, it’s unclear how, as no specific control for data sharing exists in the settings.
In addition, X is tightening its terms of service to combat data scraping. Entities accessing over a million posts in 24 hours face a $15,000 penalty. This aims to protect both user data and X's system resources.
Owner Elon Musk has been vocal against scraping, implementing measures like blocking logged-out users and placing X’s API behind a paywall. These actions have limited researchers' access to platform data, with lawsuits targeting those studying content like hate speech.

OpenAI launches dedicated ChatGPT app for Windows
OpenAI has announced the preview launch of a dedicated ChatGPT app for Windows, currently accessible to Plus, Team, Enterprise, and Edu users. This early version is part of a plan to deliver a more comprehensive experience later this year, showcasing the latest advancements, including the new OpenAI o1-preview model.
While the app runs on most Windows 10 machines, it has some limitations, such as the absence of voice features and incomplete integration with the GPT Store. Despite these drawbacks, the app enhances the ChatGPT experience by allowing users to engage with files and photos.
Similar to its macOS version, the Windows app features a compact "companion" mode, enabling multitasking alongside other applications. Users can upload documents, get summaries, and even create images using OpenAI's DALL-E 3, making it a versatile tool for productivity.
