STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

TECH
Cards Against Humanity sues Elon Musk's SpaceX

Cards Against Humanity has filed a $15 million lawsuit against SpaceX, accusing the company of trespassing and damaging land it owns near Brownsville, Texas. The game maker claims SpaceX has been using the property for six months without permission, clearing vegetation, parking vehicles, and storing materials.

The land was purchased in 2017 as part of a stunt to oppose former President Trump's border wall. Although no wall was built, Cards Against Humanity maintains a "No Trespassing" sign on the property, which is now allegedly being misused by SpaceX for its Starbase operations.

The company, which crowdfunded the land purchase from 150,000 supporters, vows to return any lawsuit winnings to the original donors, up to $100 each. They argue that SpaceX’s actions have not only damaged the land but also strained their relationship with supporters.

Elon Musk complies with Brazilian court demands for X

X is reportedly reversing its stance after weeks of refusing to comply with the Brazilian Supreme Court's conditions for resuming operations. According to The New York Times, the company’s lawyers confirmed that X has named a legal representative in Brazil and removed accounts deemed threats to democracy, but still needs to submit crucial paperwork within five days.

The missing documents are necessary to validate the appointment of Rachel de Oliveira Conceicao. X is working to restore service in Brazil after being blocked since late August, having briefly come back online using Cloudflare’s DNS.

Brazil has threatened X and Starlink with daily fines nearing $1 million for non-compliance, while users could face fines of about $8,900 for using a VPN. This move signals X's efforts to resolve the issue and return legally to Brazil.

Jony Ive is working on an AI hardware project with OpenAI

Jony Ive is collaborating with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on an AI hardware project, confirmed in a New York Times profile. This partnership follows earlier reports of their potential collaboration and was facilitated by Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky. The venture is funded by Ive and the Emerson Collective, with ambitions to raise up to $1 billion by year-end.

Currently, the project has a small team of just 10 employees, including key figures from the iPhone’s design. Led by Ive’s company, LoveFrom, the team is based in a newly acquired 32,000-square-foot office in San Francisco, part of a $90 million real estate investment.

While specifics about the device remain sparse, it’s suggested that it will leverage generative AI to offer capabilities beyond traditional software, possibly drawing inspiration from touchscreen technology and the original iPhone.
