STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

OpenAI acquires Chat.com for undisclosed amount
OpenAI, led by Sam Altman, has acquired the premium domain chat.com from Dharmesh Shah, HubSpot's founder and CTO. Shah purchased the domain for $15.5 million in early 2023 and later sold it for a higher, undisclosed price, possibly receiving OpenAI shares in the deal.
Altman hinted at the acquisition with a cryptic “chat.com” post on X (formerly Twitter), while Shah confirmed the sale and shared his belief in Chat-based UX powered by Generative AI as a key motivator for his initial purchase.
This move aligns with OpenAI's aggressive growth strategy, following its shift to a for-profit model and a $157 billion valuation in its latest funding round. The company is reportedly planning significant price increases for ChatGPT, reflecting its ambitions in the AI space.

Elon Musk sued over $1 million election giveaway
Arizona resident Jacqueline McAferty has filed a class-action lawsuit against Elon Musk and his pro-Trump group, America PAC, alleging fraud in their widely promoted $1 million daily lottery targeting swing-state voters. Filed in Texas federal court, the suit claims winners were pre-selected, contradicting Musk's public assurances of random selection.
The lawsuit follows a Philadelphia judge's refusal to halt the lottery and cites statements from Chris Gober, America PAC’s former treasurer, who admitted in court that winners were predetermined. McAferty argues the lottery was a ruse to gather personal data, calling it a breach of contract and fraud.
Participants had to share detailed personal information, without restrictions on how America PAC could use or sell it. McAferty alleges this "lottery" was a scheme to exploit voter data under false pretenses.

Ethereum Foundation launches Mekong testnet
The Ethereum Foundation introduced the Mekong testnet, a short-lived platform designed to test updates for the upcoming Prague-Electra (Pectra) fork. It provides developers an opportunity to explore changes to user experience (UX) and staking workflows, incorporating all Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) for Pectra before they reach the mainnet.
Tim Beiko, protocol lead at the Ethereum Foundation, described Mekong as a “pre-Devcon treat,” with the testnet named after the Mekong River in Southeast Asia. It allows wallet developers and stakers to familiarize themselves with the upcoming changes and offer feedback.
Mekong focuses on staking, deposits, exits, and UX changes. It serves as an important step in ensuring Ethereum’s ecosystem is ready for the Pectra fork, giving developers and stakers a chance to fine-tune the upgrades before wider deployment.

FTX co-founder Gary Wang asks judge for no jail time
Gary Wang, co-founder and former tech chief of FTX, requested no jail time in his sentencing memo filed on Nov. 6, arguing his cooperation was crucial in convicting fellow co-founder Sam Bankman-Fried. Wang highlighted his role as a key witness in Bankman-Fried’s trial, which led to a 25-year prison sentence for the former CEO.
Wang also emphasized his limited involvement in FTX’s $10 billion fraud compared to others, like Caroline Ellison and Nishad Singh, who received plea deals and testified against Bankman-Fried. Wang believes a jail sentence would create an unfair disparity with Singh, who was sentenced to time served.
Wang is set to be sentenced on Nov. 20 after agreeing to a plea deal on fraud and conspiracy charges. His early cooperation with prosecutors and role in exposing FTX’s fraudulent practices may influence his sentencing outcome.
