STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

POLITICS
Elon Musk could become policy adviser if Trump wins

A second Donald Trump administration might feature a surprising name: Elon Musk. The Wall Street Journal reports that Trump and Musk are discussing an advisory role for the tech mogul if Trump wins the presidency again.

Musk, owner of Tesla and X and founder of SpaceX, is already advising Trump on tech policy. While talks about a formal position are not advanced, they indicate Trump's ongoing alliances with conservative business leaders, despite expectations that he might lose their support after his first term.

Trump and Musk reportedly speak several times a month on topics such as technology, the US Space Force, and voter fraud. Their relationship had previously cooled when Musk resigned from a White House advisory council in 2017 over Trump's withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement.

TECH
Verizon teams up with AST SpaceMobile

Verizon has teamed up with AST SpaceMobile, investing $100 million to connect AST's satellite network to mobile phones, bridging coverage gaps beyond terrestrial towers. AST, securing investments from giants like AT&T, Google, and Vodafone, plans to launch five satellites into low orbit this summer.

Apple introduced an Emergency SOS via satellite for iPhone 14 and 15, facilitating messaging for assistance through AAA and Verizon in connectivity-limited areas. Android is set to adopt similar features. AST SpaceMobile, Starlink, and T-Mobile's satellite-to-cellular links support advanced functions like voice and video calls.

AST SpaceMobile's CEO aims for full continental US coverage with Verizon's support, following successful demonstrations of 5G connectivity from wireless dead zones, signaling promising advancements in satellite communication technology.

PayPal expands PYUSD to Solana blockchain

PayPal USD has debuted on the Solana blockchain, expanding its accessibility for users. Solana, the third most utilized blockchain globally, now offers the Paxos-issued PayPal USD for cross-border transactions, including remittances.

Jose Fernandez da Ponte, PayPal's Senior Vice President of Blockchain, Cryptocurrency, and Digital Currency Group, expressed the company's commitment to providing a stable digital currency for commerce and payments through this expansion.

This development is part of PayPal's broader venture into cryptocurrency. Recently, it obtained approval for a limited-purpose trust charter, allowing it to operate as a cryptocurrency custodian and stablecoin issuer. Solana has seen previous adoption by payment giants like Visa, which announced plans for USDC settlement on the blockchain last fall.

Gemini Earn returns over $2 billion in crypto

Gemini announced that Gemini Earn users will receive over $2 billion worth of their crypto back, more than a year after the program ceased operations. The reimbursement will be in kind, ensuring users get back exactly what they lent.

This marks a significant recovery, with users set to receive 232% of their initial investments following the program's halt in withdrawals in November 2022. Cameron Winklevoss, co-founder of Gemini, expressed gratitude for customers' patience and support throughout the process.

The Gemini Earn program, launched in 2021, allowed users to lend their crypto to Genesis Global Capital, LLC. However, Genesis filed for bankruptcy in January 2023 due to financial setbacks from collapses within the crypto industry. Gemini assures users that they will receive the remaining balance of their assets within the coming year.
