CrowdStrike president accepts 'Most Epic Fail' award

CrowdStrike president Michael Sentonas accepted a "Most Epic Fail" award at the Def Con hacking conference for a software update that caused a global IT outage last month. Sentonas acknowledged the mistake, stating it's "important to own it when you do things horribly wrong."

The Pwnie Awards at Def Con highlight both successes and failures in the security community. Categories this year included "Lamest Vendor Response" and "Epic Achievement," alongside the "Most Epic Fail" award, which Sentonas pledged to display at CrowdStrike headquarters as a reminder to his team.

CrowdStrike received the award for a faulty update that caused widespread Windows crashes, impacting airlines like Delta. The company blamed a test software bug and promised improvements in testing, error handling, and update processes to prevent future incidents.

TikTok rolls out group chats with up to 32 users

TikTok is now diving into group messaging, challenging popular apps like WhatsApp and Apple’s Messages. Users can create group chats with up to 32 people, allowing friends to chat and share content directly on TikTok.

Previously, people would share TikTok videos via other messaging apps, but now, users can watch, comment, and react together without leaving the platform. This move shows TikTok’s shift towards making its platform more interactive and social, rather than just an entertainment hub.

To ensure safety, group chats are limited to users over 15, with additional safeguards for teens aged 16-17. Teens can only join groups with mutual followers, and new joiners must be approved by the group creator. TikTok is also introducing custom stickers in DMs, letting users create and share unique stickers for added fun.

Patreon faces Apple's 30% App Store commission

Starting November 4th, 2024, Patreon memberships bought via the iOS app will incur Apple’s 30 percent commission on in-app purchases. Patreon announced that Apple is mandating the use of its payment system or risk being removed from the App Store.

Creators will need to adopt Patreon’s subscription billing method to continue earning through the iOS app, with Apple’s fee applying to both new memberships and renewals. To mitigate this, Patreon will allow creators to adjust their prices within the app.

This fee only affects memberships purchased through the iOS app; current subscriptions and purchases on Patreon’s website or Android app remain unchanged. While creators can delay the switch until November 2025, they won’t be able to sell memberships in the iOS app after the deadline unless they comply with Apple’s new rules.
