STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

Coca-Cola’s AI-generated Christmas ad sparks debate

Coca-Cola's AI-generated Christmas ad, inspired by its iconic 1995 "Holidays Are Coming" commercial, has divided the internet. The 15-second spot shows red trucks delivering Coca-Cola through a snowy, festive town, but its AI creation has sparked controversy. Critics call it a "creepy dystopian nightmare," complaining it lacks the warmth and creativity of past ads.

Others, however, praise the ad as an innovative step, highlighting the cost and time savings AI brings to production. Pratik Thakar, Coca-Cola's global VP of generative AI, noted that AI halved the ad's creation time, making it more efficient.

While some question whether AI can replicate the emotional depth of traditional ads, Jason Zada of AI studio Secret Level insists the human touch behind the project keeps it warm. This ad marks a major shift, showing that AI’s role in advertising is just beginning.

OpenAI’s early tensions exposed in newly shared emails

Emails from an ongoing legal battle between Elon Musk and OpenAI reveal tensions over leadership and direction in the company’s early years. Exchanged between Musk, Sam Altman, and co-founders like Ilya Sutskever, the messages show Musk’s concerns about OpenAI’s shift from a nonprofit to a more corporate structure under Altman’s leadership.

Sutskever warned Musk that his desire for CEO control, despite disliking the role, could lead to "absolute control" over the company. He feared this could create an AGI dictatorship, echoing Musk's concerns about rivals like Google’s DeepMind.

The emails also highlight Musk’s interest in merging OpenAI with Tesla or acquiring Cerebras to boost AI development, though these plans never materialized. Musk also expressed strong disapproval of corporate deals like the one with Microsoft, calling them "nauseous."

T-Mobile network hit by China-linked US hack

In October, the FBI and CISA confirmed they were investigating unauthorized access to US telecommunications infrastructure by hackers linked to China, known as "Salt Typhoon." Initially believed to target US officials tied to the presidential elections, reports soon revealed the hackers had broader access, compromising data from AT&T, Verizon, and later T-Mobile.

The hackers exploited vulnerabilities in Cisco Systems routers and used AI and machine learning to infiltrate networks. They remained undetected for months, accessing sensitive data, including phone lines and unencrypted texts of senior US officials, and surveillance data collected by carriers.

T-Mobile told The Journal it is "closely monitoring" the attacks, adding that its systems and data "have not been impacted in any significant way" and no customer data has been compromised.
