FDA greenlights Apple’s hearing aid feature for AirPods Pro
Apple's second-generation AirPods Pro now offer hearing aid functionality, recently authorized by the FDA as the first over-the-counter hearing aid software device. Tested on 118 individuals with mild to moderate hearing loss, the feature provides similar benefits to professionally fitted devices.
Along with this hearing aid capability, AirPods Pro will include a Hearing Protection mode to safeguard against loud environments, preserving sound quality at live events. A new Hearing Test will also allow users to create personalized audio profiles based on their hearing ability, with results accessible in the Health app.
This innovation could reduce stigma and costs for hearing aid users, addressing a global need as 1.5 billion people live with some level of hearing loss, according to the World Health Organization.

Unity has cancelled its controversial runtime fee
Unity has scrapped its controversial runtime fee, shifting focus to its seat-based subscription model, which charges an annual fee per user. However, prices for Pro and Enterprise users will rise. The runtime fee, introduced a year ago, would have charged developers each time a game was downloaded after hitting certain thresholds, sparking widespread backlash.
Developers, particularly indie creators, criticized the change, with many threatening to abandon Unity. The uproar led to the resignation of CEO John Riccitiello and significant layoffs, as the company struggled to address developer concerns while seeking new revenue streams.
New CEO Matt Bromberg, appointed in May, aims to rebuild trust by eliminating the runtime fee. Unity Personal remains free for developers earning under $200,000, signaling a move to repair relationships with its developer community.

OpenAI's new AI model that can 'think' is here
OpenAI has announced its next AI release, code-named Strawberry and officially called OpenAI o1. Two versions, o1-preview and o1-mini, are available through ChatGPT and OpenAI’s API, with o1-mini optimized for code generation. Access is currently limited to ChatGPT Plus or Team subscribers, with enterprise and educational users getting it next week.
The o1 model offers a basic chatbot experience, lacking features like web browsing and file analysis. While it includes image-analysis capabilities, these are disabled for now, and users face weekly limits on message usage.
What sets o1 apart is its ability to reason more thoroughly before responding, making it more reliable for complex tasks. This added "thinking" time helps the model perform better on tasks like email analysis or strategic brainstorming.

Google introduces AI-driven podcast feature
Google’s latest update to NotebookLM introduces Audio Overview, which transforms uploaded documents into a podcast-like discussion. This feature creates a "deep dive" conversation between two AI hosts, summarizing content and linking related topics. While the AI-generated voices sound fairly human, some odd pronunciations still reveal their artificial nature.
Currently, the feature is experimental with a few limitations. The hosts only speak English, can occasionally share inaccurate information, and can’t be interrupted. Additionally, generating audio for larger files takes several minutes.
NotebookLM, launched in 2023 as a digital assistant for document analysis, now runs on Gemini 1.5 Pro. Since June, it has gained new features and expanded to over 200 countries and territories. Google sees audio as a valuable learning tool, particularly for auditory learners.
