BeReal faces privacy complaint over tracking practices
After BeReal was acquired by Voodoo in summer 2024, the app changed its approach to tracking consent. Now, a privacy complaint has been filed in Europe accusing the app of violating the GDPR by using manipulative tactics. Noyb, a European privacy group, claims that BeReal pressures users into accepting ad tracking, which goes against the principle of "freely given" consent.
The issue lies in how the app handles users who reject tracking. When users refuse, a consent banner reappears daily, nagging them every time they try to post. Those who accept tracking are not bothered again, creating an uneven experience.
Noyb calls this a "dark pattern," designed to annoy users into giving in. The complaint highlights BeRealβs disregard for European privacy rights, potentially opening the app to hefty penalties.

Bank of England asks firms to disclose crypto exposure
The Bank of England's Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) has asked firms to disclose their current and planned crypto exposures by March 2024. This aims to help monitor financial stability and refine cryptoasset policies. Companies must also explain their use of the Basel framework, which sets capital and risk standards for crypto holdings.
Introduced in December 2022 by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, the framework provides global guidelines for managing crypto risks. The PRAβs initiative will evaluate the costs and benefits of regulatory options and shape the prudential treatment of crypto exposures.
Firms must also outline crypto-related plans through 2029, including permissionless blockchain use. This information will form the basis for assessing financial stability risks and guiding future regulatory actions.

ChatGPT gets screensharing and real-time video analysis
OpenAI has launched real-time video capabilities for ChatGPT, a feature it demoed seven months ago. On Thursday, the company introduced Advanced Voice Mode with vision, allowing users to interact with ChatGPT through their phone cameras in near real-time. Available for ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Pro subscribers, this feature lets users point their devices at objects for immediate responses.
Advanced Voice Mode with vision can also interpret content on a device's screen, offering explanations for settings or solving math problems. To use it, tap the voice icon, then the video icon in the app, or select "Share Screen" from the menu to share your screen.
Along with this, OpenAI unveiled "Santa Mode," a festive voice preset featuring Santa's voice. The update will roll out over the next week, with some users, like those on ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu, gaining access in January.

Amazon tests AI Topics for Prime Video recommendations
Amazon is testing a new AI-powered feature on Prime Video, recommending content based on AI-generated βTopicsβ like βmind-bending sci-fiβ or βfantasy quests.β If you're part of the test, you'll see tailored categories with shows, movies, and linear channels that match your interests.
The feature allows you to refine suggestions further by selecting related topics, helping you discover more content without hitting a dead end. This shift marks a step beyond traditional algorithms, adding a more dynamic AI approach to recommendations.
Rolling out to select US Fire TV devices, the new feature aligns with Amazonβs push to lead in AI technology. Last month, Prime Video also introduced AI recaps to summarize entire episodes or even seasons, enhancing the viewing experience.
