STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

Elon Musk’s X abandoned by celebrities, brands and media

Prominent figures Jamie Lee Curtis and Don Lemon are among those exiting X (formerly Twitter) following Elon Musk’s announcement of a role in President-elect Donald Trump’s administration. Curtis deactivated her account, sharing a screenshot on Instagram with a quote from the Serenity Prayer, signaling her departure.

Former CNN anchor Don Lemon, who had ongoing tensions with Musk, also left X, citing its new direction as incompatible with free speech and transparency. Lemon expressed frustration with X’s updated terms requiring legal disputes to be handled in conservative-leaning Texas courts, stating that the change serves to protect the platform from criticism.

The Guardian joined the exodus, halting content sharing with its 27 million followers on X. The British newspaper cited the site’s promotion of "toxic" content and said it will focus on platforms better suited to promoting its journalism.

EU fines Meta $840 million over classified ads business

The European Commission fined Meta €797.12 million ($842 million) for antitrust violations, accusing the company of abusing its dominance by tying Facebook Marketplace to its core platform. Regulators argue this practice unfairly exposes all Facebook users to Marketplace, giving Meta an unmatched distribution edge.

The EC also found Meta imposed unfair conditions on third-party classified ad services, using their data to benefit Marketplace exclusively. This, they say, distorts competition and undermines rivals in the online classifieds market.

Meta plans to appeal, claiming the ruling ignores competition in Europe and punishes innovation. Meanwhile, the company faces scrutiny under the EU’s Digital Markets Act for allegedly forcing users into targeted ads unless they pay for an ad-free experience. The Commission ordered Meta to stop its anticompetitive practices.

Apple's AI-powered Final Cut Pro 11 is now available

After 13 years, Apple has released Final Cut Pro 11, marking a major update for the video-editing software, which recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. Available for download from the Mac App Store, existing users get the update for free, while new customers will pay $300 after a 90-day trial.

So, what’s behind this long-awaited jump? AI. Final Cut Pro 11 introduces advanced AI-driven features, starting with Magnetic Mask, which allows users to crop people and objects from video without green screens easily. This tool enables precise control over backgrounds and effects.

Another standout AI feature is Transcribe to Captions, which automatically adds text to videos using Apple's in-house large language model. Additionally, the update supports editing Spatial Video captured on iPhones, enhancing the experience for users of Apple’s mixed-reality headset.

EU releases first draft of general AI model regulations

The European Union has unveiled a draft Code of Practice for general purpose AI (GPAI), aiming to clarify compliance under the AI Act, which took effect in August. Open for feedback until May, the draft outlines risk management strategies to help companies like OpenAI, Google, and Meta avoid penalties, which could reach €35 million or 7% of global revenue.

The 36-page document emphasizes transparency, requiring AI companies to disclose data sources used to train models—a key concern for creators and copyright holders. It also calls for a Safety and Security Framework (SSF) to address risks like cyber threats, discrimination, and potential AI misuse.

Accountability is a focal point, with rules mandating regular risk assessments and external oversight. As the draft evolves, it seeks to balance innovation with stringent safeguards for AI systems.
