STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

Apple wins $250 from Masimo in watch patent trial

Apple scored a mixed victory in its patent lawsuit against Masimo, with a federal jury ruling that Masimo had indeed infringed on Apple patents. However, Apple received just $250 in damages, the statutory minimum, signaling that money wasn’t the main motive. "We’re not here for the money," Apple’s attorney John Desmarais emphasized to jurors.

The jury found that Masimo’s W1 and Freedom smartwatches, as well as their health module and charger, had infringed on Apple’s patents, with the infringement deemed willful. This decision highlights the ongoing tension between the two companies over wearable technology.

Earlier this year, Apple ceased U.S. sales of the Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 models with blood oxygen features after a separate ruling on Masimo’s pulse oximetry patents. The latest Apple Watch Series 10 also omits the feature.

New York Stock Exchange to extend after-hours trading

The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) announced plans to expand trading hours to 22 hours a day on its digital exchange, tapping into rising global demand for U.S. stocks. Under this proposal, investors could trade all U.S. stocks, ETFs, and closed-end funds from 1:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. ET every weekday, excluding holidays.

Currently, extended trading runs from 4 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET, with regular trading hours between 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. ET, when most volume occurs. NYSE’s Kevin Tyrrell stated that the expansion highlights the strength of U.S. markets and aims to meet worldwide demand. The plan awaits regulatory approval.

Interest in extended trading is growing, with platforms like Robinhood now offering 24-hour trading on select stocks and ETFs since last year, increasing access to global markets for retail investors.

Google is developing a ‘computer-using agent’ AI system

Google may reveal “Project Jarvis” in December—a new AI tool designed to handle tasks like research, shopping, and booking flights, according to The Information. This tool, powered by Google’s upcoming Gemini model, operates within a web browser, specifically Chrome, to automate everyday online activities by interpreti ng and interacting with on-screen elements.

Major tech players are also exploring similar AI models. Microsoft’s Copilot Vision, for instance, will enable users to interact with webpage content conversationally. Apple’s forthcoming Intelligence tool is expected to handle cross-app tasks, and companies like Anthropic and OpenAI are working on AI that operates user interfaces.

While Jarvis could be shown to limited testers first, the December timeline may shift as Google finalizes development and works to refine the experience.
