Apple’s Vision Pro AR headset is finally here
After years of rumours, leaks, and speculation, Apple unveiled its long-in-the-works augmented reality headset at WWDC 2023.
As a "one more thing" announcement, Apple CEO Tim Cook took the stage to announce the company's new "revolutionary product," the Vision Pro, which he said will introduce the era of "spatial computing."
While the keynote focused heavily on the Vision Pro's augmented reality capabilities, it is capable of switching to virtual reality seamlessly by using a dial on the headset.
“Just as the Mac introduced us to personal computing, and iPhone introduced us to mobile computing, Apple Vision Pro introduces us to spatial computing," Cook said. "Built upon decades of Apple innovation, Vision Pro is years ahead and unlike anything created before — with a revolutionary new input system and thousands of ground-breaking innovations."
The Vision Pro will run on VisionOS, the world's first operating system designed from the ground up for spatial computing. Unlike Apple's other operating systems, VisionOS features a three-dimensional user interface that "frees apps from the boundaries of a display" so they can appear side by side at any scale.
The headset will include two of Apple's in-house chips: the M2 chip, which was announced at WWDC 2022, and the brand-new R1 chip. The R1 is designed to process input from the Vision Pro's 12 cameras, five sensors, and six microphones to ensure that content appears in real-time to users.
As far as battery life goes, the Vision Pro is designed for all-day use when plugged in, and up to two hours of use with its external battery pack.
The Vision Pro is priced at an eye-watering $3,499, and it won’t be available until early next year.
SEC sues Binance and CEO Changpeng Zhao
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission sued Binance and its CEO on Monday for allegedly operating a "web of deception."
As first reported by Bloomberg, the world's largest crypto exchange and its CEO, Changpeng Zhao, have been accused of mishandling customer funds, misleading investors and regulators, and breaking securities rules.
The SEC charges include the unregistered offer and sale of crypto assets, failure to restrict U.S. investors from accessing Binance.com, and operating as an unregistered exchange, broker, and clearing agency.
A Monday SEC court document filed in a federal court in Washington, D.C. alleges that Binance and its chief had a “blatant disregard” of federal securities laws and “enriched themselves by billions of U.S. dollars while placing investors’ assets at significant risk.”
“We allege that Zhao and the Binance entities not only knew the rules of the road, but they also consciously chose to evade them and put their customers and investors at risk—all in an effort to maximize their own profits,” wrote Gurbir S. Grewal, Director of the SEC’s Division of Enforcement, in a press release on Monday.
SEC Chair Gary Gensler added that Binance “attempted to evade U.S. securities laws by announcing sham controls that they disregarded behind the scenes” in a bid to keep “high-profile” American investors using the platform.
The agency alleges that Binance and Zhao misused customer funds by diverting them to a trading entity controlled by Zhao called Sigma Chain, while Binance also allegedly moved billions of dollars to another company Zhao controlled called Merit Peak.
The SEC lawsuit comes after the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) unveiled a similar complaint against Binance and its CEO earlier this year.
