Instagram now lets users create AI versions of themselves

The next time you DM a creator on Instagram, you might get a reply from their AI. Meta is rolling out AI Studio, a set of tools enabling creators to create AI personas to chat with their followers.

Initially introduced at Meta’s Connect event last fall and tested with a few prominent Instagrammers, AI Studio is now available to more US-based creators. This aims to help popular users manage the overwhelming number of messages they receive by creating AI that functions as “an extension of themselves,” says Connor Hayes, VP of Product for AI Studio at Meta.

Creators can use their comments, captions, and Reel transcripts, along with custom instructions, to train their AI. Mark Zuckerberg envisions “hundreds of millions” of these AI personas on Meta’s apps, though it remains to be seen how users will engage with AI versions of their favorite creators.

Apple brings Apple Intelligence with iOS 18.1 dev beta

Apple’s AI features are rolling out in the new developer betas: iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1. This early preview isn’t the full release expected in October but allows developers to test Apple Intelligence.

To access these features, developers should update their software and find the new Apple Intelligence option in settings. Joining the waitlist typically takes a few hours. Make sure you have an iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max or a device with an M1 chip or newer, and set your language to US English.

The beta includes tools for proofreading, rewriting, and summarizing text, plus new photo Memories and live call/audio transcription. Enhanced Siri features include a redesigned interface and improved understanding of interrupted speech. Backup your device before installing the beta, as it might be unstable.

Qualcomm’s new chipset brings 5G to budget phones

Qualcomm has announced the Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 chip, aiming to make 5G accessible to 2.8 billion users in markets like India and Latin America. This entry-level chip addresses the lack of sub-$100 5G models, which has hindered feature phone buyers in India, the world’s second-largest smartphone market.

According to IDC, the Indian entry-level smartphone segment saw a 14% decline year-on-year, with Xiaomi and Poco leading. Overall, the market grew 11% year-on-year to 34 million units, dominated by the $200-$400 segment. Qualcomm’s new chip seeks to revitalize the entry-level market, with Xiaomi set to launch a device based on it later this year.

The Snapdragon 4s Gen 2, built on 4nm technology, features an octa-core Kryo CPU. It supports standalone 5G deployment, offering high-speed connectivity in emerging markets.
