STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

Apple reports fourth quarter revenue of $94.9 billion

Apple reported record revenue of $94.9 billion in fiscal Q4, up 6% from last year, driven by strong iPhone sales despite a $10.2 billion tax charge in Ireland. The new iPhone 16 lineup and upgraded iPads were key, with iPhone 15 and 16 models surpassing previous sales benchmarks and iPad sales rising 8%.

CEO Tim Cook noted high adoption of iOS 18.1, which includes new Apple Intelligence features for writing and image refinement. This update has doubled the adoption rate of iOS 17.1, reflecting strong consumer interest in Apple’s latest software enhancements.

Though thriving in hardware and software, Apple faces challenges from a U.S. antitrust lawsuit and new EU regulations. Still, with fresh Mac models and robust demand, the company is positioned for a promising holiday season.

Meet your own personal AI Agent, for everything…Proxy

Imagine if you had a digital clone to do your tasks for you. Well, meet Proxy…

Last week, Convergence, the London based AI start-up revealed Proxy to the world, the first general AI Agent.

Users are asking things like “Book my trip to Paris and find a restaurant suitable for an interview” or “Order a grocery delivery for me with a custom weekly meal plan”.

You can train it how you choose, so all Proxy’s are different, and personalised to how you teach it. The more you teach it, the more it learns about your personal work flows and begins to automate them.

Amazon’s new Alexa reportedly delayed until 2025

Amazon's much-anticipated AI-powered Alexa upgrade, initially set to launch in late 2024, has been delayed to next year due to developmental setbacks. Although designed to handle complex questions, the new Alexa struggles with basic tasks like setting timers and controlling smart devices, prompting Amazon to halt its beta testing.

The delay stems from issues with Alexa's large language models (LLMs), which are meant to enhance its conversational abilities. Amazon executives, inspired by the rise of ChatGPT, pushed to make Alexa a serious AI competitor, even testing it with sports trivia. However, the results fell short, as the assistant often provided inaccurate information.

While Amazon initially aimed for an October 2023 release, it pivoted to promote new Kindle devices instead. Employees have pointed to internal management issues and a lack of clear AI vision as ongoing hurdles for Alexa’s evolution.

Thousands go to fake AI-invented Dublin Halloween parade

Thousands gathered in Dublin, expecting a Halloween parade that didn’t exist, all due to a fake AI-generated ad. The ad, posted on the My Spirit Halloween website, promoted the fictional "Macnas Halloween Parade," sparking viral interest that even ranked on Google. Costumed Dubliners lined the streets, saving space for a parade that was never scheduled.

As the crowd waited, Ireland’s police stepped in, urging people to disperse and confirming no parade was planned. Local councilor Janice Boylan expressed disappointment, noting that many had hoped for a safe and festive event.

The website, reportedly run from Pakistan, frequently posts AI-generated content, and this parade ad quickly circulated on TikTok and Google, fooling thousands. It’s a strange reminder of the viral potential—and pitfalls—of AI-generated content.
