STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

Wiz rejects $23bn bid from Google parent Alphabet

Cybersecurity startup Wiz has rejected a $23 billion acquisition offer from Alphabet, Google’s parent company, which would have been its largest purchase ever. Wiz co-founder Assaf Rappaport announced in an internal memo that the company will instead pursue an initial public offering (IPO).

Rappaport admitted that turning down such a substantial offer was difficult, especially since it would have more than doubled Wiz’s $12 billion valuation. The company now aims to achieve $1 billion in annual recurring revenue alongside the IPO, goals it had set before acquisition talks.

Wiz, known for its cloud-based security solutions, would have strengthened Google’s position against competitors like Microsoft and Amazon. However, antitrust concerns and investor issues influenced the decision, amid ongoing Justice Department lawsuits against Google.

Meta unveils 405bn parameter open-source AI model

Meta on Tuesday unveiled Llama 3.1, its latest large language model designed to compete with offerings from OpenAI and Anthropic. This update follows the launch of Llama 3 just three months prior, which integrated into Meta’s suite of services like Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp, and also powered its smart glasses. Amidst rapid advancements from competitors, Meta’s new release signifies that the AI race in Silicon Valley is heating up.

The new Llama 3.1 405B model, named for its 405 billion parameters, is claimed to excel in general knowledge, math, and multilingual translation. Trained on over 16,000 NVIDIA H100 GPUs—each costing around $25,000—the model is said to outperform rivals on more than 150 benchmarks.

For developers, Llama 3.1 is available for download from Meta’s official site, while general users can interact with it via Meta AI on WhatsApp or at meta.ai.

Apple’s first foldable iPhone could arrive in 2026

Apple is developing a foldable iPhone, potentially launching as early as 2026, according to The Information. The device is expected to fold horizontally, similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. Initial reports in February revealed two prototypes in the early stages, but the project now appears advanced, with an internal nickname, V68, indicating progress beyond conceptual design.

Current efforts focus on minimizing the visible crease and reducing the phone's thickness. These details align with a DigiTimes report suggesting similar advancements. There’s also speculation about a MacBook-like foldable device potentially debuting in 2026.

In addition to foldables, Apple might introduce a mechanical aperture for next year’s iPhone, enhancing background blur effects, and is rumored to be working on a thinner iPhone for 2025.

TECH SPECIAL
Telegram reaches 950 million monthly active users

Telegram has reached 950 million active users and aims to surpass 1 billion this year, founder Pavel Durov announced. The company plans to launch an app store and an in-app browser supporting web3 pages this month.

Telegram crossed 900 million users in March, and Durov mentioned plans for profitability next year. The platform is enhancing its adoption of web3 tech, supporting cryptocurrency and blockchain initiatives despite a setback in 2018. In December 2022, Telegram started auctioning usernames on the TON blockchain and began sharing ad revenue with channel owners via Toncoin.

Despite growth, Telegram faces issues with scams. Since November 2023, scammers have targeted users, prompting Durov to announce measures to combat this. Telegram will soon display registration dates and countries for public accounts and allow organizations to issue verification labels.
