What to expect from Apple’s ‘It’s Glowtime’ event

Apple is gearing up to unveil the iPhone 16 series today, marking its major entry into artificial intelligence with a revamped Siri. The live event, dubbed ‘Glowtime,’ will be streamed on Apple’s site and YouTube from Cupertino, California, at 10 am Pacific Time.

The new iPhone line will feature four models: iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Expected upgrades include an Action button for the smaller models and a new camera button with touch controls for the Pro versions. The Pro models will also sport slightly larger screens—6.3 inches for the Pro and 6.9 inches for the Pro Max.

A key highlight will be Siri’s overhaul, which introduces a new ‘glowing’ display effect, with the screen edges lighting up when activated. The new AI features, branded as Apple Intelligence, promise to offer a user-friendly approach to artificial intelligence.

Meta will let third-party apps place calls to WhatsApp

Meta is unveiling its plans to integrate third-party chats into WhatsApp and Messenger for users in the European Union. This update will allow users to manage Messenger and WhatsApp messages alongside third-party chats or keep them separate. New notifications will alert users when they can link chats from supported apps.

Meta promises rich messaging features, including reactions, direct replies, typing indicators, and read receipts. Next year, users will also be able to create groups that include participants from third-party chats.

Looking ahead, Meta plans to expand interoperability beyond messaging. By 2027, it will support third-party video and voice calls. This move comes as Meta, classified as a "digital gatekeeper" under the EU’s Digital Markets Act, meets requirements to integrate with other messaging platforms like iMessage, Telegram, and Signal.

Boeing Starliner capsule lands back on Earth

Boeing's Starliner capsule, plagued by issues, has returned to Earth, but astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams remain on the ISS. The spacecraft, operating on autopilot, landed in the New Mexico desert six hours after departure, touching down at 11:01 PM local time and eliciting cheers from Boeing’s Mission Control.

NASA deemed it too risky for the astronauts to return aboard Starliner due to multiple thruster failures and propulsion-system helium leaks detected before its ISS arrival in June. Despite extensive testing and Boeing's assurances of safety, NASA decided to leave Wilmore and Williams on the ISS until their return in February.

Though Starliner faced further thruster issues during reentry, it achieved a "bull's-eye landing," according to NASA’s commercial crew program manager Steve Stich.
