STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

Apple Music’s $450 coffee table book celebrates 100 best albums

Apple Music has unveiled a high-end coffee table book celebrating its 100 Best Albums list, a luxurious item priced at $450. Produced in partnership with Assouline, the 208-page book is a true collector's item, with only 1,500 copies available, each marked with a unique number.

The design is nothing short of opulent, featuring a custom translucent acrylic slipcase etched with the Apple Music logo, a white linen hardcover, and gold gilding on the page edges and spine lettering. Shipping is free, but the hefty price tag has already stirred controversy among music fans.

The content within the book is adapted from the digital 100 Best Albums list released by Apple Music earlier this year. While the foreword is written by Apple Music's Creative Director, Zane Lowe, the book mainly contains text-based entries from the digital list.

Elon Musk tops billionaire rankings with $335 billion

Elon Musk remains the world’s wealthiest person, with a net worth of $335 billion, according to The Bloomberg Billionaires Index. He outpaces rivals like Jeff Bezos ($228 billion) and Mark Zuckerberg ($206 billion), thanks to the success of Tesla, SpaceX, and other ventures.

Musk’s fortune has surged by $105 billion this year, a stark contrast to Bezos and Zuckerberg, who have seen slower gains of $51.4 billion and $78.4 billion, respectively. The tech sector dominates the top ranks, with names like Larry Ellison, Bill Gates, and Larry Page rounding out the list.

Despite fluctuations in individual fortunes, such as Bernard Arnault’s $36 billion drop, Musk’s growth reflects the tech industry’s enduring influence, especially as sectors like retail face more volatility. Musk’s diverse ventures continue to shape the billionaire landscape.

LG Display unveils world’s first 50% stretchable display

LG Display has unveiled an advanced stretchable display, enhancing both elasticity and durability. The 12-inch prototype can now stretch up to 18 inches, unlocking exciting possibilities for flexible screen placement in various settings.

The display, first introduced in 2022, initially stretched from 12 to 14 inches. With a new wiring structure and a silicone substrate similar to contact lens material, the latest model stretches up to 50%, displaying full RGB color at 100ppi. The display can be stretched over 10,000 times without losing quality, even in extreme temperatures and under impact.

While foldable displays are already in phones and rollable TVs, LG Display hasn’t yet shared commercial applications for this screen. However, potential uses include wearables integrated into clothing or info.

Meta adjusts ad approach amid pressure from EU regulators

Meta is adjusting its ad model in the EU to address regulatory concerns, including reducing the cost of its ad-free subscription. Starting November 13, the subscription will drop 40%, costing €6 ($6.36) on the web and €8 ($8.48) on mobile, with an added €4 or €5 for extra accounts. Current subscribers will automatically benefit from the lower price.

To comply with EU demands, Meta will prompt users to choose between a subscription or a free, less-personalized ad experience based on basic data like age, location, and gender. These ads won’t be tailored to individual interests, likely lowering engagement rates.

To offset this, Meta will sometimes show unskippable, full-screen ads, similar to those on competing platforms. While complying with EU requests, the move reflects Meta’s effort to maintain ad revenue while giving users more control.
