STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

Ohio lawmaker introduces Bitcoin reserve bill

Ohio House Republican leader Derek Merrin introduced HB 703, the Ohio Bitcoin Reserve Act, on Dec. 17, giving the state treasurer authority to invest in Bitcoin. The bill aims to protect state funds from U.S. dollar devaluation and promote technological innovation. While it doesn’t require Bitcoin purchases, it sets a framework for integrating it into Ohio’s financial strategy.

Merrin called Bitcoin “revolutionary” and likened it to digital property rights. Though introduced just before the 135th General Assembly adjourns on Dec. 31, Merrin hopes the bill will pave the way for action when the 136th General Assembly begins in January 2025.

A strong crypto advocate with a top-tier rating from Stand With Crypto, Merrin believes Bitcoin can strengthen Ohio’s economy and financial resilience, leading to broader adoption in state governance.

AUTOMOTIVE
Honda and Nissan reportedly begin merger talks

Honda and Nissan are reportedly exploring a merger, aiming to consolidate their assets under a shared holding company, according to Nikkei. This potential union of Japan’s second- and third-largest automakers could enhance their competitiveness against Toyota, Tesla, and Chinese EV makers. Mitsubishi may also join the discussions, further reshaping the automotive landscape.

The merger builds on Honda and Nissan’s earlier collaboration on EV software, batteries, and components, mirroring Toyota’s strategy of aligning with Subaru, Suzuki, and Mazda. With fewer but larger automakers emerging, competition for market share is intensifying in the EV and hybrid sectors.

Meanwhile, Honda plans to double hybrid vehicle sales by 2030, responding to high demand outside China. Chief Officer Katsuto Hayashi emphasized the importance of hybrids in North America while reaffirming Honda’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.

Less than half of iPhone users care about Apple Intelligence

Apple Intelligence, the hallmark of iOS 18, competes with AI features from Google and Samsung, but a SellCell survey suggests most consumers remain indifferent to smartphone AI. When asked about its value, 73% said AI features added "little to no value" or were overshadowed by other priorities. Only 11.1% found AI "very valuable," while 15.9% called it "somewhat valuable." Samsung fared similarly, with 87% of users downplaying the significance of Galaxy AI.

The survey also showed lukewarm opinions on which brand does AI better. Only 15.4% of Apple users favored Apple Intelligence over Galaxy AI, while 5.9% preferred Samsung's take. Most respondents either found no difference or lacked enough knowledge to compare, reflecting the early stage of smartphone AI.

These findings reveal a key insight: while AI garners industry buzz, it has yet to deliver meaningful value to users. Both brands must prove its everyday benefits to change perceptions.

Threads begins testing post scheduling

Threads is testing post scheduling, Instagram’s Adam Mosseri revealed, though replies won’t be schedulable to maintain real-time conversations. The feature gives users more control over their Threads content while fostering spontaneity. Mosseri emphasized it’s been in development for months, likely to counter claims it’s a reaction to rival Bluesky.

Recently, Threads added curated follow suggestions, drawing comparisons to Bluesky’s starter packs. However, Meta’s platform far outpaces its competitor. CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Threads now has over 100 million daily active users and 300 million monthly users, underscoring its growing dominance.

This move aligns with Instagram’s broader push for scheduling tools, building on its post-scheduling feature and the recent addition of DM scheduling. Threads’ evolution signals Meta’s commitment to blending convenience with active engagement.
