The FCC wants to make it easier to unlock your phone

The FCC plans to simplify phone unlocking by proposing a rule that would require all devices to be unlockable within 60 days of purchase. This change aims to give consumers more flexibility in choosing carriers, addressing ongoing confusion about unlocking policies.

FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel emphasized the need for clear, nationwide rules to ensure consumers aren't restricted from switching carriers. The proposal mandates that carriers must offer unlocking services shortly after phone activation, although it may face challenges from current market practices like installment plans and contract agreements.

The FCC's Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM), announced by Rosenworcel, will initiate public feedback starting July 18. This stage marks a pivotal moment in shaping future regulations, with potential pushback expected from mobile providers.

Amazon hires founders from AI startup Adept

Adept, an AI startup developing software task automation agents, has licensed its technology to Amazon, with several co-founders and team members joining the e-commerce giant. Co-founder and CEO David Luan, along with co-founders Augustus Odena, Maxwell Nye, Erich Elsen, Kelsey Szot, and other employees, will now work at Amazon.

Zach Brock, Adept's head of engineering, will take over as CEO as the company refocuses on agentic AI solutions. Adept remains committed to developing its AI products, powered by in-house models and custom infrastructure, rather than pursuing extensive fundraising for foundational models.

This move bolsters Amazon’s generative AI ambitions, with Luan set to work under Rohit Prasad on a new AGI team. Adept aims to continue creating AI models capable of automating tasks across various software tools using natural language.

IRS finalizes rules for crypto tax reporting

A new US Treasury Department rule mandates cryptocurrency platforms like exchanges and payment processors to report user transactions to the IRS, ensuring accurate tax payments on crypto sales. This measure aims to deter tax evasion by providing the IRS with precise transaction details.

The rule simplifies earnings declaration for users, as brokers must now provide a 1099 form for crypto transactions. The IRS has drafted form 1099-DA to track these transactions and will finalize it soon. Transactions involving stablecoins, which track fiat currencies like the US dollar, have a reporting threshold of $10,000.

Starting in 2026, brokers must report digital asset sales for 2025 transactions. The rule applies to platforms holding digital assets, with separate regulations for decentralized platforms expected later this year.
