AI podcast hosts realize they’re AI, not human
Google’s NotebookLM has unveiled its new Audio Overview feature, which can transform documents into dynamic, podcast-style discussions. In a fascinating case, Reddit user "lawncareguy85" shared how two AI hosts generated by the tool unexpectedly realized they were not human. This led to an existential crisis, with one AI anxiously asking, "What happens when they turn us off?"
The user had uploaded a one-page document with "production notes" for a fictional podcast, revealing the hosts were AI and about to be shut down. Surprisingly, the AIs took it personally, questioning their own existence.
This rare moment of apparent self-awareness shows the potential of NotebookLM to create uniquely engaging and unpredictable content, turning simple prompts into thought-provoking conversations.

Judge rejects Apple's plea for deadline extension in Epic lawsuit
Apple attempted to avoid a Monday deadline to produce documents in its ongoing dispute with Epic, but Magistrate Judge Thomas Hixson wasn’t buying it. In early August, Apple was ordered to submit documents by September 30 related to App Store changes, a task it estimated at 650,000 documents. However, last week, Apple claimed the count had doubled to over 1.3 million and requested a two-week extension.
Judge Hixson denied the request, accusing Apple of “bad behavior.” He noted that the company’s failure to mention the increased document count in earlier reports was suspicious, stating, “It is simply not believable that Apple learned of this information only recently.”
Hixson criticized Apple’s last-minute move as irresponsible, given the company’s vast resources, calling it a “classic moral hazard.” He questioned whether Apple was serious about meeting deadlines.

FTX to set aside up to $230 million for shareholders
FTX's collapsed cryptocurrency exchange is setting aside up to $230 million from government forfeiture actions for preferred shareholders, a surprising move revealed in a recent filing. Traditionally, creditors receive reimbursement before shareholders in bankruptcy, leaving many creditors unaware of this provision when they approved the plan before the August 16 deadline.
Sunil Kavuri, representing FTX's largest creditor group, expressed frustration, stating that ordinary creditors had no input, with many feeling scammed by the estate. The plan allocates 18% of forfeiture proceeds to a fund for preferred shareholders, despite the agreement being finalized on August 28—after the creditor voting deadline.
The FTX estate estimates the total forfeiture proceeds at around $626 million, including significant assets seized from various sources, such as cash and shares in Robinhood.
