STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

Figure unveils a new humanoid robot that can talk

Figure has unveiled its latest humanoid robot, the Figure 02, succeeding the Figure 01 introduced in 2023. A teaser video showcases the robot's slow, bent-leg gait across a demo area in Figure’s offices, with two other robots seen in the background carting totes.

The most notable update is Figure's longstanding partnership with OpenAI, which helped raise $675 million in Series B funding, valuing the company at $2.6 billion. This collaboration highlights the growing interest in neural networks within the robotics industry, especially for humanoids designed to work alongside humans.

Equipped with speakers and microphones, Figure 02 can communicate with human co-workers, enhancing safety and transparency. Such communication, combined with vision and proximity sensors, is crucial as these robots operate freely without safety cages, ensuring they remain safe and efficient on the factory floor.

Instagram updates metrics to focus creators on 'Views'

Instagram is shifting to "views" as the primary metric across all content types, including Reels, Stories, and photos. This update, rolling out in the coming weeks, aims to provide creators with a consistent way to measure their content's performance, according to a post on Instagram’s creators account.

Instagram chief Adam Mosseri explained that this change will help creators better understand engagement, as views can reflect multiple interactions from the same user, unlike reach. He also highlighted the importance of tracking "sends per reach" alongside views for a comprehensive view of content performance.

Meta is extending this focus on views across its platforms. Earlier this year, Threads introduced total view counts for posts, and Elon Musk has similarly emphasized view counts since taking over Twitter, now rebranded as X.

Judge finds Ripple Labs liable for $125M penalty in SEC case

A federal judge has ordered Ripple Labs to pay a $125 million civil penalty for violating U.S. securities laws in a case brought by the SEC. Judge Analisa Torres of the Southern District of New York found Ripple liable and mandated the payment within 30 days. The court determined that 1,278 transactions violated Section 5, resulting in a $125 million penalty.

Judge Torres issued an injunction preventing Ripple from future securities violations, citing a reasonable probability of future violations. However, she noted that Ripple’s sales after the SEC complaint might not have breached federal law.

Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse called the ruling a “victory” since the court significantly reduced the SEC’s proposed penalty. Chief legal officer Stuart Alderoty confirmed the company would respect the $125 million fine.

Spaceport brings South Korean gaming IP to Roblox and Fortnite

3

Web3 startup Spaceport is collaborating with Com2uS, a South Korean mobile gaming giant, to bring its intellectual property to Roblox and Fortnite. This partnership will allow the 500 million gamers in these virtual worlds to engage with Com2uS’s characters and create derivative works.

Spaceport’s “Internet of IP” platform aims to expand content reach and democratize its use. This follows Toei Animation’s recent decision to license its IP from the film “Hypergalactic” for Roblox and Fortnite through Spaceport.

Unlike traditional IP protection models, Spaceport enables players to remix Com2uS and Toei’s creations without legal concerns. The platform also manages content and tracks the origins of user-generated works. Co-founded in 2022 by Le Zhang and Lida Tang, Spaceport is backed by $3.6 million in venture funding.
